Its a film with another familiar premise (kid sees dead people), yet Efron is starting to demonstrate a knack for playing scarred or seriously flawed individuals despite his good looks.
As Charlie St. Cloud, another kid who has it all, Efron is about to graduate from High School and attend college on a boating scholarship. Sailing may be his passion, but nothing means more to him than his little brother Sam (Charlie Tahan) who he practically raised along side his mother (Kim Basinger) when their father walked out on them years ago.
Barely into the first act, Charlie gets into a bad auto wreck that cuts both his and Sam's lives short. Yet Charlie manages to survive after paramedic Florio (Ray Liotta) manages to re-start his heart with a little help from St. Jude.
Naturally Charlie's world is shattered and he begins to withdraw from life, taking a job as a cemetery groundskeeper which is where we find him five years later. He is at an impasse and though his mother has moved on and out of town, Charlie is stuck in a rut letting life pass him by. His brush with death has given him the ability to interact with those who have passed on, including his best friend who was killed during military service and his brother Sam.

Charlie tells Sam as he keeps his promise to meet his little brother at their favorite spot in the woods to practice baseball every day at sundown.
Efron is already a star!
Sam hasn't passed on to the other side like so many other souls and Charlie isn't able to get on with his life out of guilt, feeling he has a promise to keep.
